OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE MUSEUM

NICOLÁS ZAVALA CULTURAL CENTER

With the creation of this site museum, the valuable architectonic, historical and cultural heritage of the old Mining Hospital of the Real del Monte and Pachuca Company is preserved. Sick or injured workers of the mining company were treated here, as well as their families during a period of time.

Located at the top area of the historical district of the Magical Town Real del Monte, it Is maybe the most beautiful and interesting architectonic complex. This is the first museum of its kind in our country and, for sure, a unique place, both for its facilities and for the collections that houses and are exhibited: medical equipment, care rooms, an operating room, X-ray room, rehabilitation and recuperation area, as well as devices, medicines and substances. Original ingredients of the so-called master formulas, used since its opening in 1907 until it closed its doors in 1983, can still be found in the apothecary.

Visitors learn about treatments and remedies used to treat illnesses and conditions that were common among miners of this region. The museum is complemented with an exhibition of mine Safety Posters, which illustrate in detail, real accidents that occurred in the mines, in order to warn about the risks and dangers faced by miners while doing their job if they did not consider all proper safety measures. Thanks to the details they provide, these posters let us observe the difficult work conditions prevailing in these workings.
